Firewood questions we get asked

The things people ask most. Tap a question to see the answer — and if yours isn't here, put it in the order form below and we'll answer it.

Is the firewood seasoned?

Yes. It's seasoned and ready to burn the day you get it — we don't sell green wood that you have to stack and wait a year for.

It's about 90% seasoned oak, with small amounts of other seasoned hardwoods mixed in. All of it is good, hot-burning wood.

To keep it that way, store it off the ground with the top covered but the sides open. Wood sealed up under a tarp sweats and goes damp.

How much is in a pallet, and how many pieces?

A pallet is about half a cord — roughly 170 pieces.

So two pallets make up about a full cord. A pallet is the size most people start with, and it's easy to store.

You can collect a pallet from the shop and we'll load it into your vehicle, or we can deliver it — the wood stays contained within the pallet. Both are on the price list above.

How do you deliver it?

Two ways, depending on how much you're having.

A full cord comes by dump truck and is tipped out in a pile where you want it. It is not stacked.

A pallet — about half a cord — is delivered as a pallet, with the wood contained within it, so it arrives tidy rather than loose.

Either way, please have a think about where it's going before we arrive, and check the truck can actually get to the spot.

We deliver anywhere in Shelby County. If you're outside it, say so in the order form below and we'll tell you what we can do.

When do you start delivering? Is firewood seasonal?

Deliveries are seasonal, and start in mid-October — once the weather turns and people start wanting fires.

Do you stack the wood for me?

No — we don't stack.

A full cord is tipped out of the dump truck in a pile where you want it, and stacking it is yours to do.

A pallet is different. The wood stays contained within the pallet, so it turns up tidy and you can work through it where it stands.

What is a cord?

A cord is the standard measure for firewood: 128 cubic feet of stacked wood. Picture a stack 4 feet high, 4 feet deep and 8 feet long.

Our pieces average 18 to 20 inches, so a cord stacks up about three rows deep.

Watch out for anyone selling a "rick", a "face cord" or a "truckload" — those aren't fixed measurements and can mean almost anything.

How much wood do I need?

It depends how often you light a fire. As a rough guide: a pallet tends to see people through a Memphis winter if you burn at weekends; about a cord if you have a fire most evenings; two cords or more if you're actually heating the house with a wood stove.

If you're not sure, start with a pallet. You can always come back for more — better that than a cord sitting in the rain because there was nowhere to put it.

Do you have smaller wood for a wood burning stove?

We do also have smaller pieces for a wood burning stove, running from 4 inches to 12 inches. If that is what you need, say so in the notes on the form below or mention it when you call, and we will put smaller wood aside for you.

If you have a small firebox, measure it before you order and put it in the notes on the form — much better to know beforehand than when the wood is already in your driveway.

Can I pick it up myself?

Yes, from our shop at 2807 Farrisview Blvd, Memphis. Order on the form below and we'll arrange a time with you — pickups are scheduled in advance, so somebody's there to load you up.

We price by what you're loading into: a car trunk, an SUV, a standard pickup bed, a larger pickup bed, or a whole pallet. They're all on the price list above.

Do you sell BBQ and smoking wood?

We do — hickory, cherry, pecan and post oak.

You can buy it by the piece if you just want a few for a cook, or by the pallet. Prices are on the list above.

A whole pallet of smoking wood can be delivered, or you can collect it from the shop — either way it stands on its own. By the piece, we add it to a firewood order rather than sending it out on its own.

Smoking wood is scheduled ahead the same as firewood, so order on the form below before you come.

How do I order?

Fill in the form below and we'll get straight back to you, or text us on 901-628-5500.

Either way you'll have it in writing, so nothing gets lost between the order and the load.

Pickups need scheduling in advance, so tell us when you'd like to collect and we'll confirm a time.
